The dictionary has three or four different instances. Including injecting small amounts of poison, feel/cause sharp pain, or upset somebody. But my definition sums them all up:
(verb) Definition: acute pain felt immediately after an encounter.
A few examples:
bee, yellow jacket, or wasp spike
dirt flung in your eye at high speed
blunt, unexpected rejection
knife bite from a cooking mishap
Note: Cutting up onions, sunburns, big fights, and mosquito bites don't count; they're in an entirely different class because they lack the immediacy factor. In such cases, yes, they all still hurt, but they usually get worse before they get better.
*Not the Paul Newman movie, not the Police frontman.
